Ackquille Pollard known by his stage name Bobby Shmurda is an American rapper from Brooklyn, signed to Epic Records. He has released the song “Hot Nigga”, which involved the “Shmoney Dance”. The song has peaked at No. 43 on the Billboard Hot 100 and has been remixed by several rappers including Juicy J, French Montana, T.I., and Jeezy
Early life and career
Pollard was born in Florida to a Jamaican father and Trinidadian mother. He has an older brother. After his father was incarcerated, Pollard and his mother relocated to East Flatbush, Brooklyn,a neighborhood in New York City. Shmurda spent fifteen months in detention for a probation violation and was also arrested on gun charges, which were ultimately dropped. Pollard started rapping at age ten. The first song he remixed was Crime Mob’s “Knuck If You Buck” in 2004.
In 2014, Shmurda broke through with the song “Hot Nigga”, released in March of that year. It features the beat from Lloyd Banks’ song “Jackpot”, Jahlil Beats. The video which contains a choreography that was later named the “Shmoney dance”, was made in the summer of 2013. The song became popular among Vine users and soon lead to the “Shmoney dance” meme. Beyoncé did the move at a venue of her On the Run Tour. Drake used the song while hosting the 2014 ESPY Awards. Freestyles by various rappers have since then been released among which Juicy J, French Montana, Lil Kim, Gunplay, T.I., and Jeezy.
On June 3, 2014, Pollard was arrested and charged with felony criminal possession of a weapon. He was set free on $10,000 bail. In July 2014, Shmurda performed with Meek Mill and later signed a recording deal with Epic Records. On August 29, 2014, Shmurda released a reggae remix featuring Junior Reid, Mavado, Popcaan and Jah X. Another remix of “Hot Nigga” featuring Chris Brown, Jadakiss, and Busta Rhymes is in the works. Shmurda will release an EP/mixtape Shmurda She Wrote later in 2014 and he is also working with Jahlil Beats on his debut album to be released in early 2015.
