Suave House Records, better known The Legendary Suave House, is a record label located in Houston, Texas founded by Tony Draper. The label was founded in 1990 when Draper was sixteen years old.[1] In its early incarnation, Suave House originally went by the name Suave Records for a couple of years.[2] In 1995, the label inked a distribution deal with Relativity Records and saw their biggest successes in that partnership.[3]

In 1997, Suave House switched distributors from Relativity to Universal Records.[4] The label’s first release under new distribution was MJG’s solo debut No More Glory. By 2000, the company went back to its original status as an independent record label.

In 2007, Suave House Records also released an album from Def Jam’s recording artist Rick Ross (rapper) titled Rise to Power. The album was composed of older songs from Rick Ross during his time at Suave House. Some tracks were remixed and produced by current Suave House’s producer Jiggolo.

In April 2008, Suave House signed a joint venture deal with Koch.[5] The label’s first release under the partnership was an Eightball & MJG Greatest Hits album titled We Are the South. The label plans on releasing upcoming albums from Jiggolo and Gillie Da Kid.

Suave House Records recording artist/producer Jiggolo (Jigg) is feature on Ice Cube’s single “I Rep That West” from his upcoming album “I Am the West”. Jiggolo also produced the track.

In a March 2006 interview with XXL, Suave House CEO Tony Draper was asked about the vision of Suave House:

Why do you think Suave House II can compete in this day and age?

“Because I believe that half of the niggas that you see out right now got their game from me. When Suave was doing their thing there was no Cash Money or No Limit. I respect what they’ve done. But a lot of niggas ain’t real because they ain’t paying respect. I knew the movement was big, my shit was solid. Because the only one thing that consumers know is that they love the product. They don’t know that there is a nigga that’s making them make songs like that. I was a family type nigga, we used to sit in the house making the shit from scratch. When the code was violated, that’s when the music started changing (XXL Staff Member, 2006).

Kandy Paint Records Terry Terell Brisco, aka Mississippi Sipp, began his career by distributing his records through a small Leland,Ms Area record label. He started out in Arlington,Virginia where his mother resided. Despite being on the East Coast, Mississippi Sipp maintained his connections to the South through his Grandmother and Uncles who remained in Leland,Mississippi. Terry “Mississippi Sipp” Brisco signed his lifetime friends and family Big Mook,Black Dog Puna,Reign (his half cousin) & Marchello “Clak” Wright. Later he and Big Mook (along with his uncle Iceburg) went on to form the group KPR. During the early 2000’s, Mississippi Sipp released a few solo albums Cadillac Dope Boy & Tawk Real Da Album, with very much success. However, Mississippi Sipp was able to garner notoriety for himself and Kandy Paint Records in the South by collaborating with various mississippi artists and through his shop compilation albums One Percenters,Pimp Tendency & Kandy Paint Records 5 Stars. Following his success on the East Coast in May 2005, Mississippi Sipp decided the time was right to expand his label. After signing several digital online deals and a Internet buzz thats so big. Mississippi Sipp moved Kandy Paint Records and set up in Leland,Mississippi. He brought his sister,management and entourage. In 2011, Kandy Paint Records plan to sign a huge digital distribution deal with Apple to distribute Kandy Paint Records music. Mississippi Sipp will maintain ownership of all of his master recordings,publishing and his studio. He also became the label’s main artist, and also will releasing the album 1 Life 2 Live later this year. By 2013, Kandy Paint Records will grow to consist of Mississippi Sipp, Big Mook, Black Dog Puna,Reign,& Clake. Mississippi Sipp also writes,produce,direct,act and screen write. This started his movie career which will lead to films such as Rise 2 Fame & Welcome 2 Leland. Big Mook, Golden Boy, debuted at Number One in the streets.Many of the Kandy Paint Records artists will reach longevity and complete other projects. By 2013, it appears that the focus of Kandy Paint Records was unlimited to the Leland Mississippi family. This notion was further strengthened with the release of his artist, Black Dog Puna self titled debut album. On January 12,2013, the company buzz was so large that they literally had the Internet going nuts. Mississippi Sipp realized it is more sensible to continue to run Kandy Paint Records and organize and finance the company with profits from Digital Downloads & Club Appearance sales. He named his publishing company “Pure Players Entertainment”. By 2014, the organized label has full ownership. Kandy Paint Records look forward to developing its very own distribution company, Cross Da Bay Entertainment.

 

DJ Screw: The “Chopped & Screwed” Urban Culture & Genre Will Live On For Eternity

Chopped and Screwed (sometimes called screwed and chopped or slowed and throwed) refers to a technique of remixing hip hop music which developed in the Houston hip hop scene in the 1990s. This is accomplished by slowing the tempo down to between 60 – 70 quarter-note beats per minute and applying techniques such as skipping beats, record scratching, stop-time, and affecting portions of the music to make a “chopped-up” version of the original.

History

Preceding the early 1990s, most Southern hip hop was upbeat and fast, like Miami bass and crunk. In Houston, a different approach of slowing music down, rather than speeding it up, developed. It is unknown when DJ Screw definitively created “screwed and chopped” music: although people around Screw have indicated any time between 1984 to 1991, Screw said he started slowing music down in 1990 and also in Tulsa Oklahoma Dj Dinero And Dj Z-Nasty helped popularize Chopped And Screwed music in the Mid South.[2] There is no debate, however, that DJ Screw invented the music style.”[3] He discovered that dramatically reducing the pitch of a record gave a mellow, heavy sound that emphasized lyrics to the point of almost storytelling. After messing around with the sound for a while Screw started making full length “Screw Tapes”. At first the music was only referred to as “Screw music”, was limited to the South Side of Houston, and was seen as laid-back driving music. As Screw’s tapes started to gain popularity he started selling his tapes for around $10.[4] Screw was known to feature some of Houston’s most renowned rappers from the South Side. This eventually led to the formation of the Screwed Up Click.

Between 1991 and 1992, there was a large increase in use of purple drank in Houston.[1] Purple drank has been considered to be a major influence in the making of and listening to chopped and screwed music due to its perceived effect of slowing the brain down, giving slow, mellow music its appeal. DJ Screw, however, repeatedly denounced the claim that one has to use purple drank to enjoy screwed and chopped music. Screw, a known user of purple drank, said he came up with chopped and screwed music when high on marijuana.[2]

In the mid-1990s, chopped and screwed music started to move to the North Side of Houston and to such people as DJ Michael “5000” Watts[1] and OG RON C. It wasn’t long until a rivalry between north and south Houston started over who were the “originators” and who were the “adopters”. Michael “5000” Watts always gave credit to DJ Screw as the originator of chopped and screwed music. It is also believed that Michael “5000” Watts came up with the term “screwed and chopped”. As time passed and a younger generation got into the style, there became less worry over who was an originator of the style and who was an adopter. In the late 1990s, with the help of P2P groups such as Napster, chopped and screwed music spread to a much wider audience.

In 1999, PSK-13, an associate of DJ Screw and the Screwed Up Click (also a member of the South Park Coalition), released a screwed version of his album Pay Like You Weigh 5000 [5] which was one of the earliest examples of a full length album being given the treatment.

On November 16, 2000 DJ Screw died from a lethal combination of codeine and alcohol. Shortly after the passing of Screw, screwed and chopped music spread all over the southern United States.[citation needed] Later in 2000, the Memphis based group Three 6 Mafia came out with their song “Sippin’ on Some Syrup”. The song at first was just a minor hit but later became one of Three 6 Mafia’s most popular songs.

In 2001, 8Ball & MJG released a screwed version of their album Space Age 4 Eva (2000). The mixing was handled by Michael “5000” Watts of the famed Swishahouse, being the first screwed and chopped release on a major label.

In 2003, David Banner released a screwed and chopped version of his album Mississippi: The Album, being a first by an artist from Mississippi.

In 2005, the first screwed and chopped albums were added to the iTunes shop catalog.

In 2006 Chamillionaire’s The Sound of Revenge (Screwed & Chopped) by OG Ron C became the most successful screwed and chopped album to date.

In 2011,University of Houston Libraries acquired over 1,000 albums owned by DJ Screw.Some of the albums will be part of an exhibit in early 2012 and the rest available for research in 2013.[6]

Today it is still common to see screwed and chopped versions of mixtapes and albums released alongside the regular speed versions, sometimes in a double disc format with one disc screwed and the other regular speed.

Subculture

Chopped and screwed music was created by DJ Screw in the early 1990s. Part of the chopped & screwed music scene is a beverage known as purple drank (the active ingredients being codeine and promethazine; the color purple, which is usually present as a dye in the “drank,” has also become a symbolic color or motif to identify chopped and screwed versions of songs or whole albums. The 2007 documentary film Screwed In Houston produced by VBS/Vice Magazine details the history of the Houston rap scene and the influence of the Chopped and Screwed sub-culture on Houston hip-hop.

Robert Earl “DJ Screw” Davis, Jr. (July 20, 1971 – November 16, 2000)[1] was a Houston, Texas-based DJ. He was known as a central figure in the Houston hip-hop community and was the creator of the now-famous Chopped and Screwed DJ technique. This creation led to his nickname of “The Originator.” Davis was recognized for his various mixtapes and albums mostly on a regional level, until after his death. His legacy was discovered by a wider audience when Houston hip-hop began reaching a national audience in 2005.

DJ Screw was born in Bastrop, Texas, not far from Smithville, Texas. His father, Robert Earl Davis, Sr., was a long-haul truck driver based in Screwston. His mother Ida May Davis (who had a young daughter from a previous marriage), came to the area to be with her mother when her son was born in 1971. She returned to Screwston, but the marriage was floundering; soon it would be over, and she and her kids moved to Los Angeles for a couple of years, then back to Screwston, and returned to Smithville in 1980 at the age of nine.[2]

A young DJ Screw had aspirations of being a truck driver like his father, but seeing the 1984 hit break dancing movie Breakin’ and discovering his mother’s turntable permanently derailed those dreams. He would take her B. B. King and Johnnie Taylor records and scratch them on the turntable the way deejays did, slowing the spinning disc and then allowing it to speed back up, playing with sound. Robert Earl began buying records of his own and playing deejay with his distant friend Trey Adkins, who would rap. “Screw had a jam box,” Adkins told Texas Monthly, “and he hooked up two turntables to it and made a fader out of the radio tuner so he could deejay.” Adkins said if Robert Earl didn’t like a record, he would deface it with a screw. One day Adkins asked him, “Who do you think you are, DJ Screw?” Robert Earl liked the sound of that and in turn gave his long time friend a new name: Shorty Mac.[2]

He began DJing at age 12 in 1983, and started his trademark slowed-down mixes in 1990. The mixes began as special compilations requested by friends and those in the know. He soon made them available for sale when his close friend Toe offered to buy a mix from him for ten dollars. At that point, customers had increasingly begun requesting his more well-known mixes instead of personalized lists. During the early 1990s, he invited some of the Houston rappers from the city’s south side to rap on those mixes.[3] This coalition of rappers eventually became the formation of the Screwed Up Click.

He moved to a house near Gulfgate Mall. Fans, some driving from far away areas such as Dallas and Waco, lined up at his door to obtain his recordings. He started his own business and opened a shop up on 7717 Cullen Blvd in Houston TX called Screwed Up Records and Tapes. It has been shown in numerous music videos and documentaries as well as independent films. There are now several Screwed Up Records and Tapes spread out through Texas, including one in Beaumont and in Austin.[2]

Texas Governor Rick Perry honored him by making him an official Texas Music Pioneer.[4]

Davis died on November 16, 2000. Fans speculated about the true cause of his death. [5] When the coroner reports were released, they confirmed that he died of a codeine overdose in addition to mixed drug intoxication. The codeine came from a prescription-strength cough syrup that he would mix with soda to concoct a beverage called purple drank. In addition to codeine, Valium and PCP were found in his blood.[2] His funeral took place at Mount Pilgrim Baptist Church in his hometown of Smithville, Texas.[2]

DJ Screw has been a considerable influence in the Houston scene, which is sometimes referred to as “Screwston” in his memory. His distinct musical stylings influenced countless rap acts. Alternative weekly The Houston Press named the 1995 album 3 N’ Da Mornin, Part 2 as no. 13 on its list of the 25 best Houston rap albums of all time. The newspaper credited the release for the way it helped shape Houston’s hip-hop culture.[6] The newspaper also referred to Chopped and Screwed music as the second most likely type of music to be associated with Texas, an example of DJ Screw’s influence in the region.[7]

A music festival and car show in honor of DJ Screw was set up in 2006. The inaugural DJ Screwfest featured 200 vehicles [8] and a setlist featuring notable Houston hip-hop acts like Slim Thug, Trae, and Chingo Bling. The first festival, which took place at the Pasadena County Fairgrounds, ran into problems including rain and limited sound equipment.[9]

When the Houston hip-hop scene became nationally prominent in 2004, many of the biggest acts could be traced to DJ Screw’s crew, the Screwed Up Click. The expansive crew, which featured more than 15 rappers, were featured prominently on his mixtapes and often spent nights with him recording. Some of the more famous rappers to come out of the Screwed Up Click include Big Hawk, Lil’ Keke, and Fat Pat. While many of the S.U.C. rappers enjoyed major-label success, DJ Screw himself remained largely underground. He was uncomfortable with mainstream business practices like bank accounts and copyrights.[2] He would allow members of the S.U.C. to rap on his mixtapes free of charge, despite the large amount of exposure a screw tape feature could provide. A single tape could have reached 100,000 listeners according to some estimates; they often led to further success, including recording contracts.[5]
